Coppicing

Coppicing

Coppicing is a traditional method of woodland management, which takes advantage of the fact that many trees make new growth from the stump or roots when cut down. In a coppiced wood, young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to near ground level. In subsequent growth years, many new shoots will emerge and after a number of years the coppiced tree, or stool, is ready to be harvested, and the cycle begins again.

Miranda Michels Wildlife Sculpture

Miranda Michels Wildlife Sculpture

Miranda was born in Herefordshire but now lives and works on a hill farm in Radnorshire, surrounded by the natural world that inspires her. She began working in ceramics but quickly found the medium didn’t offer the strength and resilience needed to portray the freedom of movement so typical of her work. She is entirely self-taught and has developed a style and technique of her own doing all the welding and construction herself, using both mild steel, stainless steel and Corten weathering steel and mesh. She works mostly to commission but is a regular exhibitor at Quenington in the Cotswolds and Montcrieff Bray in Sussex, prestigious outdoor sculpture exhibitions. Work can occasionally be seen other exhibitions and galleries. Several large pieces have been exported to the USA and Canada and Europe.
